“Follow that Star” is a short, entertaining, musical nativity full of good-natured humour and memorable songs. Following this bright star toward Bethlehem, we travel with the Shepherds, the three Kings and an odd assortment of entertaining Animals towards a very humble stable. Here we meet the Innkeepers who, together with the travellers, realise that a very special and significant moment is about to happen. “Follow that Star” gleefully emphasizes the true meaning of Christmas and for children and adults alike, this story will both warm the hearts and entertain. The music ranges from some beautiful traditional melodic carols to Salsa and Calypso, so let's all join in and “Follow that Star” as this traditional musical joyfully asks us to.

'On A Night Like This' is sung by the entire cast and opens this Christmas musical. The following scene sees the shepherds in a field as they notice the bright star and debate amongst themselves whether they should follow it or not. 'Follow that Star' concludes the scene as they come to a decision.

'The Three Kings' acts as an introduction to the scene where the kings discuss the gifts they are bringing to present to the new king. There is also a touch of humour as the second king tries to explain why his gift of Myhrr is so important. 'Cavalcade' is sung as the kings begin their journey.

It is then the animals’ turn to enjoy the spotlight, and the sheep, cow and donkey take the opportunity to poke fun at the humans who are all following some star. However, keen not to miss out on any fun the sheep convince the others it could prove fun to follow the star and to look out for the humans for a change, ( a good case of adult-child role reversal!) 'S.T.A.R' is sung.

The following scene takes place in the Bethlehem Inn and adults will particularly enjoy this scene as it includes a humorous interaction between a wife and her husband, (a lot of nagging is involved!) 'A Child is Born' is sung as the cast gather around Mary, Joseph and Jesus’ crib. As the kings and shepherds lay down their gifts everyone celebrates this extraordinary birth. 'Thank You' is the perfect song to end the show. Although this play is littered with humour, the traditional nativity story is apparent and works well with the modern songs that are incorporated.

Gawen Robinson

Gawen has written music for as long as he can care to recall (having composed around 300 songs before he was 14 on an old acoustic guitar given to him by his mother). Having experienced the rock music world for a number of years playing in several semi-successful bands he decided to concentrate on musical theatre (both acting and composing). His collaboration with lyricist Stephen Robertson has, over a number of years, produced The Old Curiosity Shop and Notre Dame, both being large scale, sung through musicals (at present they are reworking the former). Gawen has also composed several, small scale children's book musicals based around historical topics covered in primary schools. He is looking forward to starting on a major new work sometime soon.
