We confidently predict that this new Gilbert and Sullivan style show will be a massive hit. This delicious pastiche has an outstandingly tuneful score, with script and lyrics bursting with wit and humour.
In a plot which has echoes of The Magnificent Seven, Daisy, daughter of Buttercup, seeks help to thwart a band of outrageous female pirates, who have taken her lover as a hostage. With the help of Iolanthe, the Fairy Queen, and the Princess Ida, she enlists the aid of The Mikado, The Scorcerer, The Duke of Plaza-Toro, Admiral Sir Joseph Porter, and Major-General Stanley to save the day.

Audiences are bound to be captivated, whether Gilbert and Sullivan fans or not, as this superb musical stands up in its own right. The script and lyrics have a Gilbertian ring to them, but uncluttered by heavy Victorianism. The songs have the soaring melodies, thumping rhythms and catchy tunes that capture the true Sullivan flavour. A few of them - Ribbic, Poor Static One, for example - are clever parodies of some of the pairs’ familiar successes. But far from being a " send-up " this glorious show is a genuine, affectionate tribute to the incomparable duo.

With 11 principal parts, and a chorus that varies from Islanders to Pirates, and from Fairies to Policemen, all with plenty of lines to contribute, pupils and staff will find this entertaining and delightful, as well as being a rewarding challenge. If it is your experience that girls tend to outnumber boys in their enthusiasm to appear in school productions, this is definitely the show for you!

To perform this shortened version you will need a minimum of half a dozen talented solo singer / actors. Average singing voices can take care of the rest - though we are confident that the catchy choruses will make your cast sound superb.
As another plus point, the costuming will not present any major problems : In fact, a hilarious highlight must undoubtedly be the arrival of the Policemen towards the end of the show!

‘Paragonia’ opens this action packed musical as the curtains open and the audience is instantly transported to the colourful island of Paragonia. Yet don’t be fooled, because beneath the peaceful appearance of the island lies havoc as the Pinafore Pirates (who are all women!) bring chaos to the land. Tired of their interfering, Daisy decides to make a stand against them and shows real confidence in ‘Daughter of Buttercup.’

After much talk about them, the audience then have a chance to see the pirates during ‘Pinafore Pirates’ and also witness the handsome man Christopher that they have taken hostage who Daisy is desperate to save. The conditions on the ship are anything but luxurious and Christopher learns what he is going to be in for when the cook Sam O’Nella introduces Chris to his cooking during ‘Sam O’Nella and his Irish Stew.’ Starting to feel home sick, and also love sick for Daisy, Christopher takes some time out to reflect during ‘Ribbic!’ as he thinks about the plight he is in.

‘Fairy Fleet’ opens the following scene as the stage transforms from a pirate ship into a magical woodland where the fairies reside. Coming across Daisy, the fairies are eager to help her defeat the wretched pirates and give Daisy a well-needed boost of confidence during ‘Fair Day’s’. They then call upon the help of ‘Princess Ida’ who understands the female mind better than anyone and will be the key to defeating the female pirates. ‘Three Determined Ladies’ follows as Daisy, Princess Ida and the Queen Fairy come together in order to save Paragonia and bring back Christopher!

The three determined ladies then call upon the help of five other people; The Admiral, The Mikado, The Sorcerer , The Major-General and the Duke of Plaza-Toro. Once they have all discussed who is going to lead the mission, ‘Protocol’ follows but no sooner than they finish the song, the pirate ship arrives full of ‘Damsels in Distress.’ The Seven are taken completely by surprise as the Pirates approach them with swords and daggers, but Daisy and Christopher seem completely unaware of the situation that they are in as they embrace each other during ‘Loves Young Dream.’

In a clever twist, the Sorcerer puts a spell on the pirates so that they cannot move, and only those who wish to improve themselves will be able to break free. Surprisingly all of the Pinafore Pirates are able to move and are henceforth released from their contracts by the Queen Pirate. However the only thing that can save the Queen Pirate is the love of a good man, and just as it seems there is no hope left, ‘The British Policemen’ is sung much to everyone’s delight!

After an eventful and action packed musical, ‘Protocol Policy’ brings the show to an end.

Malcolm Sircom

Malcolm read music at Cambridge University before entering the theatre as a Musical Director. Probably the highlight of his career was a 4 year world tour of the 'Rocky Horror Show'. At the same time he honed in his writing skills with a series of Pantomimes and Children's musicals, which were performed professionally all over the country including his hit 'Mr Men Musical' in London's West End.

He started writing schools musicals with 'Ebenezer', which coincided with the launching of Musicline. Since then his many follow-ups were so successful worldwide that they enabled him to retire from the theatre to concentrate solely on this aspect of his talents.

His major hobbies were bridge, cricket, and writing musicals for schools ! People often asked him if he was a teacher, as his shows have such a rapport with children. He answered, "No - just an entertainer pure and simple, backed by the experience of years in the professional theatre."
