Based upon The Tortoise and the Hare, Zoom is a sparkling musical comedy which retells the famous fable in an unusual way.

Harvey Hare, wealthy business tycoon, is running for Mayor of Evergreen Valley, but his methods are rather underhand. When his small, shell-shuffling employee Toby Tortoise discovers the truth, he challenges Harvey and the stage is set for the race of all time.

It's a race between fast and slow, big and small, right and wrong... but who will win in the end?

With nine outstanding songs ranging from beautiful ballads to show-stopping chorus numbers, the score is guaranteed to be a hit with everyone.

The witty, humorous script mixes comedy and pathos and is brought to life by a cast of colourful characters. With speaking parts for between 20 and 40 youngsters aged 7 to 11, plus unlimited chorus parts, this is an ideal production for schools of all sizes.

Superbly orchestrated backing tracks are available with AND without vocals on CD.

A superb DVD of ZOOM is now available.

The script is written for 40 speaking characters, as listed below. These range from principal parts to
small supporting roles. For productions with fewer cast members, condensing and doubling of characters
is possible. This can be done in numerous ways, but the following example reduces the cast number to 25:

• Combine Spike and Spiny into one part (Spike)
• Combine Beaver, Weasel, Ferret, Badger into one part (Badger)
• Reduce Squirrels to three parts (Squirmy, Squishy, Squeaky)
• Reduce Press to two parts (Jack Daw, Jerry Journal)
• Double Harriet with Betty, Hyacinth with Bunty, Harold with Jerry, Jenkins with Badger and Happy with Jack and Reggie.

Of course, there are unlimited chorus parts who may be used as Evergreen Valley residents, office
workers and race spectators, as well as an off-stage choir for backing on other songs.

Craig Hawes

Craig Hawes has been tickling the ivories ever since he was able to scale the dizzy heights of a piano stool. His passion for composing grew at a young age, matched only by his love of writing silly stories and pun-filled poetry. As a teenager he won national competitions for song composition and story writing, and these interests combined when he wrote and directed his first Christmas musical aged just 16.

After professional music training in London, Craig spent 13 years as a primary teacher and music consultant, as well as working in television and professional theatre as a musical director, arranger, composer and recording engineer. It is this weird and wonderful mix of experiences that helps Craig to create sparkling, unforgettable musicals which delight children, teachers and audiences across the globe.

In addition to his writing, Craig continues to visit schools providing professional music tuition and performing arts workshops. Along with his wife Hayla, (herself a professional director and chorographer) he is a founding director of The Young Theatre Company, a successful stage school, and Theatre Week, a performing arts summer school where his musicals are workshopped before publication. Craig is also Artistic Director of The Acorn Theatre in Nottinghamshire, where many of his musicals get their first airing.

When he’s not writing, directing or teaching, Craig enjoys collecting animation art and is a little too fond of apple crumble. He lives and writes in the heart of Sherwood Forest along with his wife Hayla and two children.

Brilliant mix of comedy and emotion...

A really brilliant mix of comedy and emotion, made for the enjoyment of everyone, from the audience to the actors. A perfect example of a dilemma, yet funny all the way through. We really enjoyed putting it together.

Really catchy stuff!

The audience had a blast and many have commented that they still cannot get the tunes out of their heads - really catchy stuff! The script is packed with humour and the characters are memorable and enjoyable to play.
As Head of Drama for our school I would strongly recommend directing this musical to other drama teachers.
