Scene One: Prologue

The Storytellers – Lyman, Frank and Baum – welcome the audience to the show and introduce the magical adventure ahead in the energetic opening number Wonderful Wizard Time. As the company joins the celebration, we catch our first glimpse of Dorothy, Toto and the colourful characters she will soon encounter on her extraordinary journey.

Scene Two: Kansas – Dorothy’s House

Life on the Kansas prairie is grey, repetitive and predictable for Dorothy Gale. While helping Aunt Em and Uncle Henry with chores, Dorothy dreams of adventure in Nothing Much Happens In Kansas. However, excitement arrives sooner than expected when a powerful twister sweeps across the prairie. As Uncle Henry and Aunt Em rush to secure the farm, Dorothy and Toto become trapped inside the house as it is carried high into the storm during Twister To Oz.

Scene Three: Oz – Munchkin Country

Dorothy and Toto awaken in the colourful Land of Oz, where they discover that their house has landed on the Wicked Witch of the East. The delighted Munchkins celebrate their freedom. Toto suddenly gains the ability to speak and walk upright in Oz. Gladys, the Good Fairy of the Northern Realm, explains that the only way for Dorothy to return home is to seek the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City. Wearing the enchanted Silver Boots, Dorothy sets off with Toto during the uplifting song performed by the Munchkins - Yellow Road.

Scene Four: The Wicked Witch Of The West’s Laboratory

In her dark laboratory in the West, the Wicked Witch learns that her counterpart has been defeated by a girl from beyond the desert. Furious that the magical storm intended for the Emerald City went disastrously wrong, the Witch vows revenge. Alongside her chaotic army of Winged Monkeys, she discovers a weakness in the Silver Boots’ magic and begins plotting to seize them. Her ambitions to dominate all of Oz are revealed in the show-stopping villain number Wicked Witch.

Scene Five: The Cornfield

Travelling deeper into Oz, Dorothy and Toto meet a lonely Scarecrow who has been completely outwitted by a gang of conniving crows. After helping free him from his post, the companions learn that Scarecrow longs for a brain so he can think clearly and succeed in life. Inspired by the possibility that the Wizard might help him, Scarecrow joins the journey and imagines a brighter future in Scarecrow 2.0.

Scene Six: The Yellow Road Next To The Forest

Continuing along the Yellow Road, the companions discover a rusted Tin Man frozen beside the forest. The companions oil his joints and set him free. Tin Man explains how the Wicked Witch of the East gradually transformed him from flesh and bone into tin. Though grateful to move again, he reveals that he feels incomplete without a heart. Hoping the Wizard can restore what he has lost, Tin Man joins Dorothy’s group and dreams of becoming Tin Man 2.0.

Scene Seven: The Yellow Road Through The Forest

Inside the forest, the companions encounter a Lion whose terrifying roar sounds more like an anxious ‘meow’. Although he is meant to be the King of Beasts, the Lion is paralysed by fear and constantly runs from perceived danger. The Lion bumps into the companions in the forest and faints in terror. The companions discover the Lion’s nervous nature and, after helping him up, encourage him to join them - seeking courage from the Wizard. The 2.0 theme comes to a rousing conclusion with all the companions singing in the uplifting number Lion 2.0.

Scene Eight: Field In Front Of Emerald City

In this very short scene, the Storytellers narrate the rest of the companions’ journey along the Yellow Road to the Emerald City.

Scene Nine: Emerald City Entrance

The companions arrive at the entrance to the magnificent Emerald City. Before they are allowed inside, however, they must endure a series of over-the-top security checks carried out by the Wizard’s highly vigilant Guardians. After finally being cleared for entry, the companions explore the lively metropolis, as its’ colourful citizens perform the feel-good song Emerald City.

Scene Ten: The Wizard’s Throne Room

Inside the intimidating Throne Room, the companions finally come face-to-face with the enormous mechanical Wizard’s Head surrounded by terrifying effects. The Wizard refuses to grant their wishes immediately. Instead, he demands that they travel into the dangerous West, defeat the Wicked Witch, and bring back her enchanted telescope before he will consider helping them.

Scene Eleven: The Witch’s Tower / The Wilderness In The West?

Reluctantly, the companions continue into the Witch’s territory. From her laboratory, the Wicked Witch spies on them through her enchanted telescope and sends crows to attack. Faced with being pecked into submission, Scarecrow unexpectedly outwits the crows. The frustrated Witch then summons a brutal batch of bees to sting the companions into submission. Out of love for his friends, Tin Man uses himself as a shield for the companions and blunts the bees’ stings. Finally, the furious Witch sends her Winged Monkeys to capture Dorothy. The Lion tries to be brave and stop the kidnapping, but the Winged Monkeys prevail, taking Dorothy and leaving the other companions helpless in the wilderness.

Scene Twelve: The Witch’s Lab / The Wilderness In The West

Imprisoned within the Witch’s laboratory, Dorothy refuses to surrender the Silver Boots. The Witch and her Winged Monkeys gleefully perform a short reprise of Wicked Witch. After failing to force the boots from Dorothy’s feet, the Witch leaves Dorothy tied up while she goes looking for some dissolution potion. Meanwhile, Dorothy’s friends manage to sneak into the castle and free her. As they try to make off with the telescope, the Witch reappears and confronts them. As she closes in, it seems all hope is lost, but then, with kind encouragement from Dorothy, the Lion successfully roars at the Witch. Shocked by this, the Witch accidentally spills the dissolution potion on herself and dissolves to the floor. The companions take the telescope and head back to the Emerald City.

Scene Thirteen: The Wizard’s Throne Room

Back inside the Throne Room, the companions discover that the Wizard is in fact, a lowly old fraudster from Omaha with no real magical powers. His real name is Oz, and he admits that he and Glinda, the good fairy of the south, keep up the charade to give the city folk someone to look up to. This is confirmed when Glinda appears. Although the companions do not receive their wishes in quite the way they expected, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion discover that the qualities they sought had been within them all along. Oz and the Guardians perform the motivational number Inner Wizard. Glinda also reveals that Dorothy can use the silver boots to return home at any time.

Scene Fourteen: Emerald City Entrance

The people of Oz celebrate a new era of peace in the joyful song Without Wickedness. Dorothy and Toto say goodbye to their newfound friends Dorothy clicks her heels together three times and the Silver Boots magically transport her and Toto home during the short song Return To Kansas.

Scene Fifteen: Kansas – A Prairie

Dorothy and Toto wake up on a prairie close to their house. They quickly reunite with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, who have no recollection of the twister from earlier. The Storytellers leave it to the audience to decide if Dorothy and Toto’s adventure really happened or if it was all a dream. Changed by her adventure, Dorothy is just glad to be back with her family. In the short song Everything’s Perfect In Kansas, Dorothy concludes that there is no place like home. The company assembles one last time to perform the emotional Everyone Matters before their bows and curtain calls.

Performing Licence: valid for 12 months from date of issue for THIS musical only

The Musicline Performing Licence covers you to perform this musical.

It is illegal to perform ANY published musical without the appropriate licence which is only available from the publisher of that musical.

'Blanket' licences which you may have DO NOT cover the performing of published musicals.

Why we use total school roll:
Our performance licence pricing is based on the total number of pupils on the school roll (according to Ofsted figures) – not just those involved in the production or in a specific year group. This provides a clear and consistent way to reflect a school’s overall size and budget.

Most schools have over 200 pupils on roll and will therefore pay the standard £30 per performance.

To support smaller schools, we’ve introduced a reverse sliding scale – offering reduced fees to those with fewer than 200 pupils, making it more affordable for everyone to stage our musicals.

A performing licence is required for EACH PERFORMANCE.
