The show opens with ‘Make your Mother mad’ followed by a short scene between Ben and his mum and dad where the young boy breaks a ‘priceless’ statue that belonged to his parents. However, this mother’s unfortunate choice of the word ‘monster’ means the play takes a surprising twist; ‘The garden lament’ follows.
Once in the garden, Ben meets some other ‘monsters’ just like himself and before long the little monkeys appear and sing ‘Cheeky Monkey Song’ (no doubt these ‘monkeys’ and ‘monsters’ are all phrases that will be familiar to the children!
After a short, humorous interaction between the monkeys, monsters and Ben, the Fidgets appear and sing ‘The Fidget Song.’ Soon, Ben starts to miss his mum but before he has time to get too upset the Terrible Twos appear on stage and cause mayhem during their small number ‘Two by Two.’ Ben is probably extremely grateful at this point when he hears his mum calling, and is allowed to return home. But before he returns, he joins in with all the monsters, monkeys, and other little terrors on stage to sing ‘Isn’t it Good.’
Luckily, before Ben sets off for home, a hare appears and presents him with a glass statue identical to the one he broke. His mum is overjoyed when Ben shows her what he has found and is almost just as overjoyed to have her little monster home! ‘The Garden lament (reprise)’ ends the show.
